Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is common with many men over the age of 50 years old. In the USA approximately 30% of men over 50 will have some signs of BPH. It is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate. As the prostate grows, it restricts the flow of urine as it exits from the bladder to the urethra and therefore reduces the ability to fully empty the bladder.
The symptoms are:
A sudden need to urinate
Needing to urinate frequently
An inability to empty the bladder
A slow urine stream
Needing to get up during the night to urinate
If untreated, while not serious, it can lead to infections of the urinary tract and kidney problems. If you believe you have some of these symptoms, you should seek medical advice from your Urologist.
